Port Hawkesbury town officials face nearly $500,000 budget deficit

Town officials in Port Hawkesbury are staring down the barrel of a budget deficit of $489,000 in the wake of COVID-19.

Erin MacEachen, the town’s chief financial officer, gave an overview of the town’s financial situation to councillors at a special meeting Thursday.

MacEachen said the source of the lost service revenue in the draft budget comes largely from the COVID-19 lockdown.

She said there were savings in reduced expenditures, but not enough to balance lost revenue.

Councillors are scheduled to vote on the budget at June’s regular town council meeting Tuesday.
