Next Richmond Co. council will not have mayor

Voters in Richmond Co. won’t see a mayor on their next ballot, but they may be asked if they want one.

Municipal council directed the county’s CAO to contact municipal affairs about whether the question of mayor versus warden could be added to ballots in the upcoming October municipal elections, or if it would have to go to plebiscite.

Warden Brian Marchand tells The Hawk the majority of councillors don’t believe they have a clear mandate from residents to add a mayor to council yet.

“This council, for the next term, will not have a mayor position,” he says. “It’ll be a decision of the next.”

That means Richmond Co. couldn’t have a mayor before 2024.
