There were thousands of peaceful protestors in Antigonish Saturday.
The demonstration was one of many across the country, and in the US, following the death of unarmed Black man George Floyd at the hands of police.
Protestors gathered to kneel at Columbus Field for eight minutes and 46 seconds, the length of time an ex-Minneapolis police officer kneeled on Floyd’s neck May 25, which untimately led to his death.
Demonstrators then marched down Main St., around town, and back to Columbus Field.
Organisers said between 3,500 and 5,000 people took part.
Co-creator Quincy Meh told The Hawk the turnout warmed his heart, but it doesn’t end here.
“Don’t forget about this tomorrow, this lasts every day,” he says. “We’ve got to remember this stuff every day, racism has to stop.”
There was no uniformed police presence, but town bylaw officers worked with organisers to control traffic.
