With COVID-19 forcing many people to work from home, ongoing internet issues in the Quad Counties are front of mind.
The Director of Communications at Develop Nova Scotia says the province currently sits at about 70 per cent high speed internet coverage.
Deborah Page tells The Hawk they plan to fix that within two to five years.
“We’re ensuring more than 95, and as close to 100, per cent of Nova Scotia homes and businesses have access to high speed internet,” she says. “We’re in the midst of that program right now.”
Page says infrastructure development is happening around Inverness and north of Antigonish, and will connect 4800 homes and businesses.
She says they’re trying to address two issues:
“If you don’t have any internet, you have no access to go get internet, can’t buy it,” she says. “Or, if you only have access to internet that is capable, but it’s not capable of meeting our minimum speed.”
Page says that’s 50 Mbps download for wired connections and 25 Mbps for wireless connections, increasing to 50 Mbps within five years.
