Donations pour in for student-athletes, coach following fire

Online fundraisers for a trio of student-athletes and a coach from StFX who lost their homes to fire have well surpassed their goals.

Fire destroyed a five-unit complex on Hawthorne St. in Antigonish early Friday.

A GoFundMe page indicates Santino Centorame, Adam Laishram and Daniel Robertson- all members of the StFX men’s hockey team- lost their condo, along with a large number of personal possessions, clothing, furniture and household items in the fire.

The original goal was $6,000; donations have since surpassed $9,400.

Funds have come from former and current players and coaches, local residents, and university alumni, including Gerry Dee, a well-known comedian and former X-Men hockey player.

Organizers say any money raised above what’s needed will be donated to the Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada in memory of Oliver Smith, the young Antigonish boy- and the inspiration behind OllieBots– who lost his life to the disease in June 2019.

Meanwhile, another GoFundMe fundraiser for Josh Crouse, a StFX strength and conditioning coach who also lost his home in the same fire, has surpassed its goal of $5,000, going beyond $15,000 in donations.
