Port Hawkesbury hosts its first-ever pride rally

A pride event takes place in the Quad Counties Monday night.

It’s being held in Port Hawkesbury at 7 p.m.

Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton told The Hawk Morning Show it’s the first-ever pride rally in the town.

“The way we have shown our pride to date has been the raising of the pride flag and the installation of rainbow crosswalks,” she said. “This is such a wonderful addition to the Town of Port Hawkesbury, and another way to express our support.”

Chisholm-Beaton said town officials are fully behind the event.

She said it’s the logical next step.

“(It’s) very important for the town to support events like this and other events that will bring us to a community that’s more inclusive, where everyone feels welcome and everyone belongs.”

The event starts with a rally outside the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, followed by a march if weather permits; otherwise, the rally will take place inside the facility.

Organizers say participants are asked to wear masks and practice physical distancing.
