Reopened Canso inpatient beds a good start, more work to be done

Guysborough’s warden says having six inpatient beds reopened at their Canso hospital will help get them over the hump.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority reopened the inpatient unit at the Eastern Memorial Hospital Sunday, after hiring four new registered nurses, which filled the hospital’s nursing compliment.

Warden Vernon Pitts tells The Hawk the beds don’t solve their long-term problems; they still need more doctors in the community.

“The time is now, we have to address this situation,” he says. “It’s been ongoing for years and now is the time to address it, so let’s get it done.”

Pitts says the new nurses and reopened unit shows the good work they’ve done in recruitment.

He says, still, they’ve got work to do.

“We’ll keep pursuing that avenue,” he says. “We’re not having too much pickup on it, but we got to keep jumping through the hoops.”

Pitts says he’s got nothing but good things to say about the doctors and nurses who’ve been keeping the hospital running so far.
