COVID-19 forces Baddeck to review governance

COVID-19 has been hard on municipalities across the province.

It’s not just municipalities, villages have been hit hard too.

Baddeck Village Commission Chairperson Brian Morrison says it forced them to do a governance review.

Morrison tells The Hawk the status quo isn’t working and that leaves two options.

“Sharing services with the county of Victoria,” he says. “Or we would dissolve the village.”

Morrison says the community is heavily reliant on the tourism industry.

He says that industry is one of the hardest hit by the virus.

“These are difficult times for the village, and all small villages,” he says. “We’re just trying to get through it.”

Morrison says they’ll know the full impact once they’ve collected taxes, tax revenue makes up 98 per cent of the village’s revenue, and they’ll decide how to proceed then.

He says, regardless, they will do what they can to keep the village intact.
