Warden says he’s pleased with engagement

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says it’s great for people to come forward for council.

Five of the municipality’s eight districts will be contested in the upcoming municipal elections.

After September’s regular municipal council meeting, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said the interest speaks to engagement in the municipality.

“There (are) people out there that have ideas,” he said. “All the good ideas haven’t been thought of yet- I don’t have them all, my colleagues around the table don’t have them all.”

Pitts, who was acclaimed in District 6 (Lundy-Larry’s River-New Harbour-Tor Bay-Charlos Cove) the last two elections, is being challenged by Susan Cashin this time around.

He said campaigning has been very different in the midst of COVID-19.

“I am not knocking on doors- I do not want to jeopardize people’s lives, nor do I want people jeopardizing my life or the lives of my loved ones,” he said. “I’ve been doing some phone calling- I expect to be doing a mail-out shortly.”

Voters across the province go to the polls in municipal elections Oct. 17.
