The former finance director of the Coady International Institute has been sentenced on a theft-related charge.
RCMP say they received a complaint regarding fraud at the Coady in July 2018.
James Edward Marlow, 55, of Lower South River, who was fired from the university the same month, was accused of misappropriating more than $200,000.
Officers arrested Marlow in Sept. 2018; they laid charges of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.
He was released on conditions; his case opened in court in Dec. 2018.
Marlow pleaded guilty to the theft count during an election-and-plea hearing in Antigonish Provincial Court in November; the Crown withdrew the fraud charge.
He received a conditional sentence- house arrest- of two years (less a day), 12 months of probation, and 223 hours of community service during a sentencing hearing Monday.
Marlow was accused of creating fake invoices from suppliers, requisitioning cheques from StFX for those invoices, and putting the cheques into his personal account, which constitutes misappropriation of funds, theft and fraud.
University officials filed a lawsuit against Marlow asking for punitive and aggravated damages, as well as interest and legal costs, in Aug. 2018.
They say they reviewed their internal financial management processes to ensure future integrity and security, and their review found no other irregularities, so they’re confident the matter was isolated.
