CAO says privacy breach won’t compromise election

The chief administrative officer of Inverness Co. says an accidental privacy breach will not compromise the integrity of the upcoming municipal election.

Inverness Co. officials recently announced a draft list of electors- including birthdates- had been released to candidates.

Keith MacDonald, the municipality’s CAO, tells The Hawk a new list is going out to candidates.

“The returning officer is requesting the original list that he forwarded to the candidates to be returned or destroyed,” he says. “He is advancing a revised list to the candidates.”

MacDonald says they have rigorous e-voting identification protocols.

He says the birthdates alone are not enough for anyone to cast fraudulent votes- a confidential PIN, provided to each elector by mail, is also required.

“(It) requires both that confidential PIN number as well as their date of birth,” he says. “There (are) checks and balances in the process as the election moves forward.”

MacDonald says any misuse of the information released to candidates would be considered corruption through the Municipal Election Act.

Municipal elections take place across the province Saturday.
