March in Antigonish to support Mi’kmaw fishermen

A march in support of Mi’kmaw fishermen in the southwestern end of the province is happening in Antigonish Saturday.

Organizers say commercial fishermen are harassing, attacking, and destroying the property of Mi’kmaw fishermen trying to conduct a moderate livelihood fishery in the Saint Mary’s Bay in Digby Co.

Mike Sack, Chief of Sipekne’katik First Nation, asked Mi’kmaw fishermen to stay off the water Friday amid ongoing tensions.

The group will march from Chisholm Park to the Antigonish police station, starting at 6 p.m., to protest inaction by the RCMP.
