Local sports preview (Friday)

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League open their respective 2020-21 seasons on home ice.

The Strait Pirates host the Eskasoni Eagles at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, while the Antigonish Bulldogs meet the Miners at the Antigonish Arena.

Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road.

The Halifax Mooseheads travel to PEI to play River Denys’ Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Mooseheads (3-4-2), who have lost two of their last three after Thursday’s overtime home loss to Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart, are third in the Maritimes Division with eight points, four points behind the Islanders (6-1-0), winners of six of their first seven to start the season, for second.

It’s the second game in the 12-team season series between the teams; Charlottetown won the first 5-0 in Halifax Oct. 16.

The Cape Breton Eagles are in New Brunswick to square off with the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Eagles (3-5-0), who have lost three of their last four, are fourth in the Maritimes Division with six points, two points behind Halifax for third, and two points ahead of the Sea Dogs (1-3-2) and Moncton, who are tied for fifth with four points.

It’s the first game in the 12-game season series between the teams; they play again in Saint John Saturday afternoon.

Both games start at 7 p.m.
