Warden says gender balanced council a step forward

The Warden of the Municipality of the County of Inverness says the county has taken a step forward.

Half of the municipal districts are now represented by women, and Bonny MacIsaac has been acclaimed deputy warden.

Councillors, three men and three women, were sworn in at a ceremony Thursday

Afterward, newly elected Warden Laurie Cranton said it’s important.

“I think it strikes a good balance of ideas throughout the council,” he says. “Typically, over the years, there’s been very few women involved in council.”

Cranton said this election shows that’s changing, but it’s important to remember women, like former Warden Betty-Ann MacQuarrie, have been making valuable contributions to the municipality for years.

He said the diversity of experiences will make the council better.

“I think that provides us with that balanced approach to things that we need to be mindful of.”

CAO Keith MacDonald said this is the first time men and women have been equally represented on the council.
