Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders have a weekend home-and-home series with Pictou Co. in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (2-2-0) have split their first four games of the 2020-21 season; Pictou Co. (3-1-0) has won three of the first four.

It’s the first game of the season between the teams.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The teams meet again in New Glasgow Sunday afternoon.

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League have a pair of weekend games.

The Northern Selects meet the Cape Breton Lynx in Membertou at 2:30 p.m.

The Selects (3-1-2) won the first two games in the six-game season series against the Lynx (2-4-0) by identical 8-0 scores in October.

The teams meet again in Membertou Sunday morning.

The Cabot Highlanders are in New Brunswick to take on the Moncton Thunderbirds in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (2-2-0) have split their first four games of the season, while the Thunderbirds (1-0-1) have a win and an overtime loss.

Game time is 7 p.m.

It’s the first of back-to-back games between the teams, who meet in Moncton again Sunday afternoon.

The Novas are on the road in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They visit the Cole Harbour Storm.

The Novas (1-4-1) have one win in their first six games; the Storm (0-4-2) are winless in their first six.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

The Novas visit Pictou Co. Sunday morning.

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on home ice for the second time in as many nights.

The Cape Breton Eagles host Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at Centre 200 in Sydney for the second night in a row.

The Eagles won Friday night’s game between the teams.

The Halifax Mooseheads, coming off Friday night’s home win against River Denys’ Colten Ellis and Charlottetown, host the Saint John Sea Dogs at Scotiabank Centre.

It’s the second game in the 12-game season series between the teams; Halifax won the first 5-4 in a shootout at home in October.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
