A local legion rep says COVID-19 restrictions have changed the way we mark Remembrance Day.
Rod Corbett, a spokesperson for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 in Port Hawkesbury, says it hasn’t made the day any less important.
Corbett tells The Hawk only 25 people will be able to attend the ceremony in-person, which has moved from the town’s cenotaph to inside the Legion hall, but it will be broadcast live.
“The service is going to run the way it’s always run- when people are listening to it on the radio, it will to sound the same as if they had listened to it when was being held over at the cenotaph,” he says. “The only difference is you won’t see 400 wreaths being laid- you’ll hear a list of about 400 people.”
Corbett says wreaths will be set up in advance instead of being laid one-by-one in a wreath-laying ceremony.
He says each dedication will be read during the service.
“All those who have donated to the community wreaths or to the business wreaths will have their name recognized, along with the name of whom the wreath is being laid in memory of.”
Those dedications- and the entire service- will be broadcast live on 101.5 FM The Hawk starting at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday.
