Officials with the Town of Antigonish are moving forward with their accessibility plan.
Mayor Laurie Boucher says they’ve awarded the contract to develop the plan to reps with Upland Planning and Design.
After November’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Boucher said the first step is to determine what they have- and don’t have- to meet accessibility needs.
“I can tell you there’s a lot we don’t have- we have a long way to go,” she said. “We’re hoping, with the help from Upland, we’ll be able to develop a community that’s more accessible and more inviting for everybody.”
Boucher said the plan will determine what can be done for town-owned properties and private businesses.
She said making their community more accessible won’t be an easy task.
“We do have quite a bit of challenges here,” she said. “We do have limited space, as far as businesses, the old buildings, and the old infrastructure.”
Boucher said there will be community consultation sessions to come up with ideas for the plan, which they hope to have ready by the end of 2021.
She said there is accessibility funding available from their provincial and federal counterparts for any proposed changes.
