Local sports preview (Wednesday)

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals are on home ice in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Royals (1-2-0), who have lost two of their first three games to start the 2020-21 regular season, host the Northumberland Night Hawks (0-0-0).

It’s the first game of the season between the teams.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 6:30 p.m.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

The Halifax Mooseheads travel to PEI to play River Denys’ Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Mooseheads (5-5-4), losers of back-to-back games, are tied with Saint John for third in the six-team Maritimes Division with 14 points, four points behind Acadie-Bathurst for second; the Islanders (11-2-0) are in top spot with 22 points.

Charlottetown has won two of the first three games in the 12-game season series.

The Cape Breton Eagles square off with the Saint John Sea Dogs at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The Eagles (6-8-0), who have lost back-to-back games, are tied with Moncton for fifth in the division with 12 points, two points behind the Sea Dogs (5-5-4) and Halifax for third.

The teams have split the first two games in their 12-game season series in October.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
