Sunday is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Strait Area Women’s Place spokesperson Kelsey Clyke says it’s more important than ever.
Clyke tells The Hawk Morning Show COVID-19 has created a spike in partner violence.
“There has been an increase in gender-based violence, especially during COVID-19,” she says. “Some increases may be because they are spending more time with their abusers, raising stresses within the household, isolation from their social supports.”
Clyke says the day was chosen in honour of the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique mass shooting victims.
However, she says the day is for all the victims of gender-based violence.
“It is important that this vigil is happening because it is a reality that violence is still happening within our communities and especially to women in our society.”
Clyke says there won’t be an in-person ceremony because of COVID-19, but you can tune-in to the livestream Sunday at 6 p.m.
