A local First Nations band councillor has resigned amidst sex-related charges.
Cyrus John Bernard, 52, faces six counts each of sexual interference and sexual assault in relation to incidents between 2014 and 2015.
Bernard, who has been released from custody on conditions, is expected for an arraignment hearing in Wagmatcook Provincial Court Jan. 6.
He was re-elected to We’koqma’q council in October.
In a letter to residents dated Dec. 3, Annie Bernard-Daisley, the band’s chief, said Bernard resigned effective immediately.
Bernard-Daisley said band officials are not required to fill the vacant seat, and they won’t hold a byelection due to rising COVID-19 cases provincially.
