Municipal councillors in Victoria Co. have again asked for a reduced speed limit near a popular rest stop.
The request comes following three fatal collisions in as many days on Hwy. 105 in Victoria Co. in December- one in South Haven, one near Baddeck that left two people dead, and another in Bucklaw.
Bruce Morrison, the warden of the municipality, tells The Hawk they want the limit on the section of highway near Baddeck reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.
“There are three businesses that operate right off the TransCanada,” he says. “It’s a busy spot, and it is difficult to both access the property (and) leave the property safely.”
Morrison says councillors voted to send a letter to officials with the province’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal at their December council meeting shortly after the fatal collisions, and staff members sent it a week later.
He says they’ve been lobbying TIR officials since 2003.
“We’re hoping that we’ll be successful this time with lobbying to have that speed zone reduced down to 60,” he says. “We’re rather adamant about that- we have been for a number of years, and we continue to do so.”
Morrison says it’s what is required to improve safety on that stretch of highway.
