Fraser named House’s best orator

A local MP has been recognized by his colleagues.

Sean Fraser, who represents Central Nova, has been named the best orator in the House of Commons.

The vote, which included MPs from all parties, is part of MacLean’s Magazine’s Parliamentarians of the Year awards.

Fraser says he’s always enjoyed public speaking.

“It’s actually one of my favourite parts of the job,” he says. “To get up on your feet in the House of Commons- whether in-person or virtually- to take questions in Question Period, to take part in debate, and try to put forward arguments that you think are not only going to win the room, but to convince Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-cast that you might actually be on the right side of things.”

Fraser says he grew up in Merigomish, a small rural community in Pictou Co.

He says he learned many valuable lessons during his childhood.

“I had a big family, and we had people from all walks of life coming through those doors on a daily basis,” he says. “I always found that the people who were the most convincing were not the ones who used the fanciest words, but they were the people who could take a complicated subject, and distill it down to a simple explanation that everybody would understand, and that would actually resonate with people.”

Fraser was also one of three finalists for the rising star in Parliament.

It’s the second straight time he was nominated for that award.
