Liberal leadership candidate says he’s focused on people

A Liberal leadership candidate from Antigonish Co. says he’s still focused on hearing from people in the final weeks of the campaign.

Antigonish MLA Randy Delorey says he’s not thinking about how many members he’s signed up, or exactly how much money he’s raised.

Delorey tells The Hawk he’s comfortable leaving that with his team.

“The fundraising team might have the numbers, but that’s not been my focus,” he says.

Delorey says he’s focused on policy and speaking with delegates.

He says that’s the most important piece.

“The focus of the final number of weeks will be continuing our conversations with those delegates to hear from them and share with them our vision for the party, and the province,” he says. “And encourage them to cast their ballot for me.”

In a release Thursday, provincial Liberal Party officials say membership has grown from 9300 members in September to nearly 16,000 members by Jan. 7.

They say 8100 members registered as delegates before the deadline Tuesday.

Those delegates will vote on a new party leader, and premier, between Feb. 1-6. The winner will be announced at a virtual leadership convention Feb. 6.
