Mulgrave town officials are trying to reduce their policing costs.
Town councillors met with a Department of Justice liaison at January’s committee of the whole meeting.
After February’s regular council meeting Monday night, Mayor Ron Chisholm told The Hawk they pay for a full RCMP member, but they only have a handful of calls a year.
“It’s a great chunk of change out of our budget for sure, ever year,” he said. “It just keeps, gradually, climbing and climbing and climbing.”
Chisholm said the town’s low crime rate does not justify the cost.
He said Mulgrave’s tax base has not grown in a decade.
“Our police costs keep going up, and our funding hasn’t gone anywhere.”
Chisholm said he was set to meet with RCMP review board members to raise his concerns again Tuesday.
He said he is trying to get a better deal for the town.
