Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders visit the Cole Harbour Wolfpack for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (7-4-2), who split their first two games since play resumed, are third in the eight-team league with 16 points, two points behind Halifax for second, and two points ahead of fourth-place Pictou Co.; the Wolfpack (4-6-0) are seventh with eight points.

It’s the first regular season game between the teams.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The teams square off again in Cole Harbour Sunday morning.

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League are on home ice.

The Northern Selects play the Penguins in the first half of a weekend home-and-home series at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre at 3 p.m.

The Selects (11-1-2), who won both their games since play resumed and have one loss in 14 regular season games, are in top spot in the four-team Nova Scotia division with 24 points, nine points up on second-place Halifax; the Penguins (3-11-0) are last with six points.

The Selects have won the first four regular season games between the teams by a combined score of 27-2.

The teams play in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon.

The Cape Breton Lynx host Halifax in a pair of weekend games in Membertou.

The Lynx (5-8-1), winners of their first two games since the restart, are third with 11 points, four points behind Halifax (6-5-3) for second, and five points ahead of the last-place Penguins.

Halifax leads the season series between the teams with three wins and a tie through the first four games.

Puck drop is 4:30 p.m.

The teams meet in Membertou again Sunday morning.

The Cabot Highlanders play the second of three games in as many days in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders face the Fundy Thunder, who sit in top spot in the eight-team league, in the second half of a home-and-home series; the Highlanders won the first half in Port Hawkesbury Friday night, the first regular season game between the teams.

Game time is 4 p.m.

The Highlanders travel to Bedford to take on the Basin Armada Sunday afternoon.

The Novas are on home ice in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They host the Truro Bearcats.

The Novas (5-8-1), who split their first two games since play resumed, are 10th in the 12-team league with 11 points, three points behind the four teams tied for sixth, and three points ahead of 11th-place Valley; the Bearcats (11-1-2) are tied for top spot with 24 points.

Truro has won the first two games in the season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m

It’s the first of back-to-back games for the Novas, who travel to North Sydney to play the Cougars Sunday morning.

The Cape Breton Eagles visit River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Eagles (7-10-0), who have lost their first two games since play resumed, are tied with Saint John for fourth in the six-team Maritimes Division with 14 points; the Islanders, who won against Halifax at home Friday night, are in top spot.

Charlottetown has won four of the first five games in the season series between the teams.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Cape Breton visits Halifax Sunday afternoon.
