Warden says it’s the right time to replace rotary

The Warden of Inverness Co. says the Port Hasting’s rotary replacement is important step forward for the county.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal released the province’s Five-Year Highway Plan on Jan. 27.

A project to replace the Port Hastings rotary was on the list for 2021-2022.

After February’s regular council meeting Thursday, Laurie Cranton, Inverness Co. warden, told The Hawk, in its current form, the rotary is a poor welcome to Cape Breton.

“With people that drive across this causeway,” he said. “See some beautiful scenery, then they’re hit with the roundabout we have today.”

Cranton said isn’t not just about looks, the current rotary is confusing, inefficient, and dangerous.

He said, with increasing traffic to the island, he wants quick work done to create a more functional exchange.

“It’s certainly where we welcome all the visitors into Cape Breton Island,” he said. “We want that to be functional as best it can be.”

Cranton said the rotary is in Inverness Co., so they’ll have a big part to play in any development around it.
