A local MLA says the reconstruction of the Port Hastings rotary will go a long way to improving traffic flow.
Allan MacMaster, the MLA for Inverness, says officials with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal conducted traffic studies and came up with a plan to improve function and safety.
MacMaster tells The Hawk they’re replacing the old rotary with a new roundabout.
“The most significant feature, beyond it being a roundabout, is that there’s going to be an extra lane from the roundabout down to the bridge,” he says. “(That) will allow storage of vehicles that are waiting to cross the causeway.”
MacMaster says that extra lane is a key part.
He says it will almost eliminate congestion in the area while the causeway is open.
“I’m hopeful that the addition of the lane down to the bridge will help to store the cars that are waiting to cross the causeway,” he says. “(That would allow) everybody else who wants to get through the new roundabout to sail right on through.”
MacMaster says a clear roundabout, even when the causeway is open, is a major improvement.
He says it will help reduce frustration when the causeway is open, making the whole area- and connected highways- much safer.
