Group challenges you to get outside this winter

Members of a province-wide charity group say they want you to Take the Roof Off Winter!

Kerry Copeland, the executive director of the Healthy Tomorrow Foundation, says they do that with five challenges to get people out and moving during the coldest months.

Copeland told The Hawk Morning Show it’s as important to stay active in winter as it is in summer, and they want to show everyone can have fun doing that.

“You don’t have to go spend the day on the slopes; you don’t have to go snowshoeing,” she said. “It’s as simple as maybe there’s a beach close to you, or a trail that you want to go and just check out.”

Copeland said you can take part by sharing a picture or video on a weekly theme to their social media pages.

She said staying active in winter doesn’t have to be anything big.

“There’s a lot of ways to move outside that don’t involve you going and buying a bunch of expensive equipment or doing things you’re not comfortable doing- start small,” she said. “Plan a five-minute or ten-minute walk, even one night after dinner, take your flashlight, (and) if you have kids, kids love that kind of stuff- it’s simple things you can do to get outside.”

Copeland said she encourages everyone to take part, dress warm and stay safe.

The final challenge ends March 12.
