MODG councillors discuss library funding, service

Guysborough’s warden says municipal officials aren’t interested in contributing any more funding toward libraries.

Councillors said they were concerned reps with Eastern Counties Regional Library would ask for a funding increase during March’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon.

They said they feared a cut to service was still possible, even with an increase to the $36,000 they already contribute annually.

After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, the warden of the municipality, said their funding is in addition to various in-kind services they provide.

“The municipality does the maintenance, we do the lights, we do the phone, we do all the bills in regards to that,” he said. “I can’t see where these costs are coming from.”

There are two libraries within the Municipality of the District of Guysborough; municipal officials own both buildings.

Pitts said their current level of weekly service is 16 hours at Guysborough’s library and 24 hours in Canso.

“That’s substandard anyway- if they’re going to cut services, what’s left to cut?” he said. “Is the next thing to close libraries?”

Pitts said they should know more following Thursday’s board meeting.

He said municipal officials are not interested in providing any more funding at this point.
