Therapist says she saw two very different Desmonds

An occupational therapist says she saw two very different Lionel Desmonds.

Julie Beauchesne, who worked with Lionel Desmond at Sainte Anne’s veterans’ hospital in Quebec, appeared on the 12th day of testimony at the Desmond Fatality Inquiry in Port Hawkesbury.

Beauchesne told the inquiry Desmond showed he wanted to get better, but would become defensive if he felt criticized.

“He wanted to take the responsibility, and at the same time he didn’t want to take the sole responsibility for all of the problems that he was having in his life, or in his relationship.”

She said sometimes he would be a funny, cool joker and other times be sarcastic and angry.

Beauchesne said Desmond fought with himself, even while he tried to interact with others.

“Joking with others, that could be sarcastic but in a funny way, but sometimes… sarcastic in a not so funny way.”

Her testimony was cut short due to technical issues. The inquiry is set to resume Monday.
