Local sports preview (Tuesday)

The Strait Pirates open the 2020-21 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League playoffs on the road.

They meet the Miners in Membertou for game one of their best-of-seven, Sid Rowe Division semi-final series.

The Pirates (5-5-1), who ended the regular season with back-to-back wins, finished third in the five-team division with 11 points; the Miners (9-3-2) were second with 20 points.

The teams met three times, with the Miners winning all three.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The series shifts to Port Hawkesbury for game two Friday night.

 

The Cape Breton Eagles visit River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The teams are at the opposite end of the standings in the six-team Maritimes Division- the Eagles (11-17-1), losers of five straight and seven of the last eight, are last in terms of points percentage, while the Islanders (24-4-0) are in top spot in the division, and the entire league.

Charlottetown leads the season series 8-2.

Game time is 7 p.m.

It’s the first of back-to-back games between the teams, who play again in Charlottetown Wednesday night.
