Despite Friday storm, winter was milder than normal

Despite the messy weather Friday, it’s the last full day of winter.

Dave Philips, Senior Climatologist for Environment Canada, says, overall, it was actually a milder season than normal in the Quad Counties.

Philips tells The Hawk temperatures were warmer than usual most months.

“It was almost like you were sending out search parties looking for winter,” he says. “Months had temperatures that were two to three degrees warmer than normal, I mean there was some snow, but, my gosh, the snow on the ground right now is not very much.”

Philips says we only have to look to the sea to know why.

He says warm water kept it mild.

“The oceans, really, have never been warmer than this particular winter,” he says. “In some places in Atlantic Canada you’re being bathed with water that’s over five degrees warmer than normal.”

Phillips says it had a huge impact on the way winter felt.

Spring begins Saturday.
