Dave Phillips, Senior Climatologist for Environment Canada, says spring is on the horizon, but we haven’t seen the last of the cold winter weather yet.
Saturday is the first day of spring.
Phillips tells The Hawk he expects a slow start to the season.
“It’s not necessarily over, I always say: ”til April’s dead, change not a thread,'” he says. “Don’t put away the winter gear and get out the muscle shirts and tanks tops.”
Phillips says that’s not a bad thing.
He says an early spring can be bad for farmers and gardeners, with spikes in temperature causing plants to begin to bud, only to be killed by early spring frost.
“I think going slow is not what, psychologically, we want, but its the best for the most,” he says. “Ease out of winter and get into summer.
Phillips says he’s broadly expecting a mild spring in the Quad Counties, warmer and dryer than normal.
