Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Strait Pirates meet the Miners in Membertou in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Miners lead the best-of-seven, Sid Rowe Division semi-final series 1-0.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The series returns to Port Hawkesbury for game four Monday night.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders are in Dartmouth for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (11-9-3), winners of four in a row, are fourth in the eight-team league with 25 points, six points behind Dartmouth (15-6-1) for third, and two points ahead of fifth-place Pictou Co.

Dartmouth has won the first three games in the season series.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

The teams play again in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon.

 

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League resume their respective playoff series.

The Cape Breton Lynx host Halifax at Membertou at 10:30 a.m.

The best-of-five, Nova Scotia semi-final is tied 1-1.

The Northern Selects can close out their first-round series against the Penguins with a win in game three in Dartmouth at 5:30 p.m.

The Selects won the first two games of the series in New Glasgow March 13-14.

If the Penguins can win and stave off elimination, the series will remain in Dartmouth for game four Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders play their second of three straight games in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

It’s the third game of the season between the teams, who split their first two games in February.

Game time is 6 p.m.

The teams face off again in Truro Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas remain on the road in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They visit the Valley Wildcats.

The Novas have won the first two games in the season series, both by one goal.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The Novas return home to host Halifax in their regular season finale Sunday afternoon.

There’s one game in the Antigonish Rural Hockey League playoffs.

 

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers in game five of their best-of-seven, league semi-final.

The Warriors took a 3-1 series lead with a 7-4 win in game four March 13.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7 p.m.

Heatherton advances to face St. Croix, who swept the County Outlaws in their first-round series, in the league final with a win; a Pleasantdale win forces a game six Sunday night.

 

The Battle of Nova Scotia resumes in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Cape Breton Eagles.

The teams are at the bottom of the six-team Maritimes Division in terms of points percentage; the Eagles (11-19-1), losers of seven straight and nine of the last 10, are last, while the Mooseheads (11-15-6), who have lost two of their last three, are fifth, trailing fourth-place Moncton.

Halifax leads the season series between the provincial rivals 7-5.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Cape Breton returns home to host River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and Charlottetown Sunday afternoon.
