Local fire chief says don’t light your lawn on fire

A fire chief in the Quad Counties says you shouldn’t light your grass on fire.

This is the time of the year some people light their lawns on fire in hopes of making them grow back better and faster.

Donald MacDonald, the chief of the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department, says they can get called to help with grass fires in other areas, but it’s not a major issue in residential areas.

“We’re fortunate here in the town- we don’t run into that,” he says. “I’m sure there are some rural areas with some farm fields that people tend to do that.”

MacDonald says grass fires can waste valuable time and resources.

He says they’re not always set on purpose.

“When we do (respond), they’re normally accidental,” he says. “Something might spark them if it’s dry.”

MacDonald says there are more myths than benefits associated with burning your lawn.
