Ice storm would have been worse without upgrades- warden

A local warden says the municipality fared well despite a freezing rain storm that hammered the region.

Laurie Cranton, Inverness Co.‘s warden, says the county faced widespread washouts, ice damage and power outages, but municipal infrastructure remained intact.

Cranton tells The Hawk they were concerned about their municipal water systems.

“We were keeping a close eye on our pump systems with our water supplies and things like that,” he says. “Everything (as) far as that went fairly well.”

Municipal officials spent significant money making long overdue infrastructure upgrades in recent years.

Cranton says there were no major issues.

“It’s fairly new equipment- we didn’t have generating systems (and) it was reported that it would have been a lot different had we not installed that equipment,” he says. “(The CAO) had to send some individuals out to check on- or make some minor repairs- to a generator or something, but it was very insignificant, and done in a few minutes.”

Cranton says he was pleased Nova Scotia Power and provincial workers acted quickly to resolve outages and repair washouts.
