Mayor doesn’t anticipate tax increase

The mayor of Mulgrave says there won’t be a tax increase in their upcoming budget.

Town councillors received their draft operating budget at May’s regular meeting Monday night.

After, Ron Chisholm, Mulgrave’s mayor, said they’re in a good place financially, all things considered.

Chisholm told The Hawk they could have a potential surplus, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“There should be a surplus we’re thinking, but we won’t know until the next few weeks,” he said. “There’s still some things coming in that have to be covered under that part of the budget.”

Chisholm said they’ll know for sure if there will be a surplus when they have the final budget.

He said they won’t increase their tax rates regardless.

“No- we’re good,” he said. “We don’t have anything out there that’s that big of a priority that we’ll have to put the tax rate up.”

Chisholm said they’ll be ready to approve their 2021-22 budget at June’s regular council meeting if all goes well.
