Local council changing meeting schedule

A local town council is changing their meeting schedule.

Mulgrave councillors made the decision at their May regular council meeting Monday evening.

Ron Chisholm, the Mayor of Mulgrave, told The Hawk councillors decided to replace their committee of the whole meetings with regular council meetings.

“Everybody was on the same page,” he said. “They just wanted to, instead of sitting there and not being able to make a motion after hashing it all out, let’s just do it in the one meeting.”

Chisholm said they confirmed they could stop having committee of the whole meetings, and could instead hold as many regular council meetings as they chose, with Department of Municipal Affairs officials.

He said councillors didn’t see much value in having committee of the whole meetings and this gives them more flexibility.

“Instead of hashing it out, and hashing it out, well why don’t we just hash it out through a regular council meeting,” he said. “Talk it out, and if something needs to get passed, we pass it.”

He said they can still call committee of the whole meetings if it’s required.
