The mayor of a local town says its role as a service hub has put it in a strange position during the third wave of COVID-19, lockdowns, and travel restrictions.
There have been more potential exposures in Port Hawkesbury than any other community in the Quad Counties.
After May’s regular council meeting Tuesday evening, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said the town provides essential services for people across the region.
“With increased exposure, and the fear that comes along with that, we want to make sure that anybody who has had the misfortune of contracting COVID-19, we want to make sure that they feel supported, that they are not stigmatized.”
Chisholm-Beaton said with exposures in the community, and at one of the town’s two regional schools, there’s no one that hasn’t been touched by the third wave.
She said no one should be shamed for that.
“The burden of fighting and illness is enough to bear without having to worry about any kind of stigma associated with it,” she said. “It has been a challenge and I know it has been a source of fear and confusion and uncertainty within our region and within our town.”
Chisholm-Beaton said, most of all, it’s important to stay kind.
