DFO warns boaters to avoid whales off Inverness Co.

The Department on Fisheries and Oceans is warning boaters to keep their distance, after Beluga Whales were spotted off the coast of Inverness Co.

DFO Officials say photos and videos of the whales near shore in Chéticamp are being shared on social media.

They say the animals are endangered, and the law says you must stay 400 meters away from them.

Officials say approaching marine mammals too quickly, coming too close, or making too much noise can disturb, or even harm, the animals.

They say people shouldn’t offer food to Beluga Whales, or other marine life, either.
