Richmond Co. investigating proposed offshore wind project

Richmond Co. councillors are considering offering their support to a wind power developer.

Reps with Brezo Energy Inc. outlined a plan to county council to begin conducting research and development for their offshore wind turbine technology in the waters off Richmond Co.

After May’s regular council meeting Tuesday, Amanda Mombourquette, the warden of Richmond Co., told The Hawk it’s great a company is expressing interest in developing the region.

“An industry around sustainable and environmentally responsible offshore wind might be able to develop in this region,” she said. “That’s an exciting prospect for our lovely deep waters.”

However, Mombourquette said it’s not something they are going to rush into.

She said it’s important to consider environmental factors, and the possible impact on the fishery.

Mombourquette said they plan to look into it.

“Maybe there’s an opportunity for Nova Scotia to become an exporter of this kind of renewable energy,” she said. “Depending on what we find out related to environmental impact.”

Councillors directed staff to reach out to Department of Environment officials to gather information on potential environmental considerations, regulations, and assessments before they make a final decision.
