Port Hawkesbury in line for affordable housing funding

Port Hawkesbury is one of three communities to receive federal and provincial funding for affordable housing development as part of the National Housing Strategy.

The town will receive $1.2 million to restore and repair 24 already-existing vacant units. A news release says the apartments will be rented at prices “significantly below the market rate.”

The announcement came today, June 2, from Infrastructure and Housing Minister Geoff MacLellan and federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Ahmed Hussen.

Breton Apartments will be providing units for repair.

“We are pleased to be a part of this partnership, and to be part of a team working to address affordable housing needs in Port Hawkesbury,” Danita Rooyakkers, co-owner of Breton Apartments, says in the news release. “Everyone deserves a high-quality place to call home that they will be able to afford for years to come. We’re proud to deliver inspired, forward-thinking developments where people can feel confident and be part of a community.”

The provincial and federal government will invest a total of $3.25 million to create 65 affordable housing units in Nova Scotia, geared toward seniors and low-income people.

Bridgewater will also get $1.25 million toward building 25 affordable units — five of which will be accessible units, and a further two of those five completely barrier-free.

The Oyster Pond region of Halifax Regional Municipality will also see $800,000 to convert a the former Jeddore Lakeville Elementary School into affordable one-bedroom units for seniors.
