Some Inverness Co. residents are getting a new wastewater treatment facility.
Officials from all three levels of government are providing more than $5.8 million to fund the project- $2.3 million in federal funding, almost $2 million in provincial funding and $1.5 million from municipal officials.
It will serve residents in the village of Whycocomagh and the We’koqma’q First Nation.
Laurie Cranton, the warden of Inverness Co., tells The Hawk the new facility has been a long time coming.
“Our wastewater treatment throughout the municipality in many areas needs work,” he says. “This is one that needed expansion and work on the existing system.”
Officials say it will support population growth in the two communities.
Cranton says an upgrade on the current system is very welcome.
“It was bad enough that we were starting to replace lift stations and other components that are very expensive.”
Cranton says some preliminary work at the site is already underway.
Design work is expected to be done by January; the project is scheduled to be finished by March 2024.
