MODG councillors discuss flyer concerns

Flyers were a hot topic at Guysborough council.

Reps from SaltWire were asked to address concerns with flyers not getting picked up, being left outside, and ending up as litter during June’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Ricky McLaren, who represents District 7 (Goldboro-Isaac’s Harbour-Country Harbour), said he counted 44 flyers packages on the road and in ditches in his area recently, including five in one driveway.

After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, the municipality’s warden, said McLaren is prepared to cite SaltWire reps through the municipality’s litter bylaw if it happens again.

“I will bring that complaint forward to the Eastern Region Solid Waste Management committee, where we have a compliance officer in regards to solid waste,” he said. “We’ll be pursuing that going forward.”

Pitts said there have been improvements in some areas where community boxes are used.

He said things have gotten better in the Canso and Dover areas.

“They put (the flyers) in the box, the residents in turn go down and get their flyers, and I guess it’s working out really well,” he said. “We don’t have to contend with the litter- it’s a win-win situation.”

Pitts said SaltWire reps can resolve the situation, or municipal officials will get their solid waste compliance officer involved.
