Sietse Vanzwol will surrender his licence to practice veterinary medicine at 5 p.m. today
Vanzwol is the owner of the Highland Animal Hospital in Port Hawkesbury.
He’s been at the center of a lengthy audit, after he mistakenly euthanized a healthy dog last August.
A complaint was made to the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association following the incident, and an audit of Vanzwols practice, which also has offices in Inverness and Cheticamp, was conducted.
The Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association made the decision to revoke Vanzwol’s licence, effective July 9.
Registrar of the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Frank Richards says the audit showed a history of inaccurate record keeping in Vanzwol’s practices.
“I’ve been the registrar for over thirty years and I have never dealt with a complaint where this has happened in the past,” says Richards.
He also noted, this isn’t the first time they’ve had complaints about Vanzwol’s patient care.
Because Vanzwol will no longer be a licenced veterinarian after 5 p.m., he has one year to sell his practice, according to legislation, Richards says.
“During the year though, he cannot engage in the practice of veterinary medicine at any level,” says Richards.
Richards also added, he hopes the woman who’s dog died can finally have closure.
