Hayes taken first overall in MHL draft

A local hockey player was taken first overall in the Maritime Junior Hockey League entry draft.

The Miramichi Timberwolves selected Ryan Hayes of Port Hawkesbury with the top pick Saturday.

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan picked Hayes, a blueliner with the Cape Breton West Islanders in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League, in the eighth round (146th overall) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft in June.

Nine other Islanders were picked in the MHL draft Saturday.

-River Denys’ Keir Jordan also went in the first round (eighth overall) to Pictou Co.
-Antigonish’s Kevin Walker went in the second round (22nd overall) to Truro
-Havre Boucher’s Rory Wood was selected in the third round (36th overall) by Yarmouth
-North Grant’s Ray MacKinnon was taken in the sixth round (65th overall) by Miramichi
-Antigonish’s Leyton Stewart also went in the sixth round (71st overall) to Pictou Co.
-Guysborough’s Jacob Cook was taken in the seventh round (75th overall) by Edmundston
-Antigonish’s Jack Milner was selected in the eighth round (89th overall) by Truro
-Antigonish’s Bryce Thomson was also chosen in the eighth round (92nd overall) by Grand Falls
-Antigonish’s Adam Tkacz went in the ninth round (104th overall) to Pictou Co.

Another Antigonish player, Tully Grant, was chosen by South Shore in the third round (25th overall).
