Parking fees to double in local town

Seeing a ticket in your windshield is going to be just a little more painful in a local town.

The amended parking by-law passed second reading at a special Antigonish Council meeting Wednesday evening.

Laurie Boucher, the town’s Mayor, told the Hawk councillors upped the fine from $10 to $20.

“We want to make sure that people are paying attention to the parking meter,” she said. “Making sure that there’s adequate turnover for businesses in the town.”

Boucher said it brings them in line with other local municipalities.

She said there’s another big reason, a change on Saint Francis Xavier University’s campus.

“StFX, this year, is going to paid parking and we’re anticipating, probably, some overflow,” she said. “We’ll want to make sure that the parking spots in town that are close to the university are not taken advantage of, and that they’re left available, as well, for the businesses in the town.”

The change comes effect Sept. 1.
