NDP candidate: Pandemic recovery must be about people

Like most parents, Betsy MacDonald wants her daughter to inherit a better future. It’s what drove her to politics.

MacDonald, who’s from Antigonish, is the NDP candidate for the riding of Central Nova.

People are worried about climate change, MacDonald says, especially parents like herself, who want a brighter future for their children.

“It’s very evident that the time for urgent action is long overdue and we need a government that’s willing to make the tough choices to put us on a path to doing our part globally to keep emissions down.”

She’s campaigning on a promise of supporting people to help communities in Central Nova recover from the pandemic.

“We need to make the recovery about people,” she says. “It’s got to be about workers and families and making the investments needed in things like green jobs, universal pharmacare, childcare and affordable housing.”

Her professional background is in the non-profit sector; if elected, her role as an MP would be a continuation of that work, she says.

MacDonald has personally felt the struggle of finding childcare and affordable housing and notes that her perspective is much needed in Ottawa.

“I have lived a lot of the struggles that many people in Central Nova have lived, including, having to scramble for childcare, having to live on a budget and make tough choices and trying to find affordable housing.”

She also ran in 2019 under the NDP banner.
