Keep your eye out on your way to work Tuesday morning.
It’s the first day of the school year, so you’ll see plenty of kids on sidewalks, in crosswalks, and at bus stops.
Constable Morgan MacPherson, Community Policing Officer with the Antigonish RCMP, tells The Hawk you should make sure you slow down and watch for the little ones.
“The kids have been off now for the past two months, they’re going to be going back to school, they’re going to be a little excited,” he said. “We’re just asking drivers to be more vigilant at crosswalks, intersections and bus stops.”
MacPherson said kids might have forgotten some of how to behave around cars during the break.
He said you should give them a quick reminder.
“Especially if they’re going to go walking to school,” he said. “Remain on the sidewalks, or using marked crosswalks, looking both ways before they cross.”
MacPherson said school zone speed limits are back in place, so make sure you check your speed until you get used to them again.
He issued another reminder, it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus. That carries a $700 fine.
