It was a quiet evening for Mulgrave town councillors when they resumed regular meetings Tuesday night.
Some discussion surrounding the tender for work to replace the Wild Bridge on Main Street had Mayor Ron Chisholm expressing concerns after the meeting.
“When [politicians] were canvassing for the seat in the riding, it slipped out that it was ready for tender and I was told that it was out to tender about a month or two ago,” said Chisholm in an interview after the meeting.
The town needs to install new sewer lines as part of the replacement of the sewage treatment plant, said Chisholm. Those lines will need to be attached to the new bridge, causing some concerns that the timelines for the two projects may not line up as they need to.
Also discussed at the meeting was the opening of the new fitness facilities at the former Mulgrave Memorial Education Centre building.
The project began near the onset of COVID-19, Chisholm noted, but was delayed by the pandemic.
Two rooms of the old school have been converted into a weight room and a cardio room after the recreation director for the town, Heather Brennan, came up with the idea.
“They had a lot of seniors and youth that were using the gym to walk…and [Brennan] came up with the idea that people had an interest in a fitness centre and she ran with it,” Chisholm said.
There’s been a lot of interest from the people in town, he said. The goal is to host an open house in the coming weeks so community members can check the space out and see if they’d like to buy a membership.
Chisholm hopes the fitness centre can open by the first week of October.
